the mountains

I always work in the studio. In painting on heavy handmade paper (mostly) I never want to make a representation of what I see, rather I take pictorial references as a mere source from which I can construct my own image, changing shapes or colours to suit a moody atmospheric representation. I do the merest pencil drawing and then  I paint an underwash of a very transparent colour ,mostly yellow ochre, I wait for this to dry , I then form the subject shape and  build up the image with other washes of varying intensity. I patiently wait for each wash to dry and the wait allows me to evaluate progress. (David Wardman’s mountain paintings are available for purchase.
